Summer Sippers

Summer Sippers - Discover the best summer wines

Triangle Grapevine’s recommendations for the best refreshing summer wines to keep on hand

Summer is peeking around the corner here in North Carolina. School and sports are winding down, and I’m eagerly awaiting the slower pace of the season: sleeping in, beach days, grilling out, and long evenings spent relaxing with friends and family.

As the weather changes, so do the bottles I reach for most often. While I appreciate a bold cabernet, I prefer to save those richer reds for chilly fall and winter nights. Summer calls for crisp, high-acid whites, easy-drinking “porch pounders,” refreshing rosés, and light reds that taste even better with a slight chill.

Here are a few of my favorite summer sippers. Some may already be familiar, while others might inspire you to branch out and try something new.

Bubbles All Summer Long

Okay, bubbles aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but sparkling wine belongs in every season — especially summer.

When temperatures rise, I usually reach for prosecco. It’s affordable, versatile, and pairs with everything from brunch to late-night snacks. Add a splash of juice for an easy summer cocktail. I tend to gravitate toward peach, mango, or pineapple flavors, though traditionalists may prefer classic orange juice.

One surprisingly delicious combo? Simply Blueberry Lemonade with prosecco. It looks fancy, tastes refreshing, and takes almost no effort.

Prosecco is also my favorite way to kick off a dinner party. Serve it with light appetizers and snack boards before transitioning into wines that complement the main meal. Even a casual lunch, chicken salad straight from the container and prosecco in an insulated tumbler, somehow feels elevated when my toes are in the sand.

Vinho Verde: The Ultimate Poolside Wine

Vinho Verde is a true summer “porch pounder”. I especially enjoy the frizzante styles with their slight spritz.  Light-bodied, low in alcohol, and incredibly refreshing when well chilled, vinho verde is practically made for beach trips and pool days. Bonus: it’s usually very budget-friendly, making it easy to stock up for the season.

It’s delicious on its own but also pairs effortlessly with light seafood dishes, salads, and simple pasta meals. Think grilled shrimp, lemony linguine, or fish tacos.

Just remember: no glass by the pool.  A Pourvino is the perfect addition to your beach bag.  Holds a full bottle in an insulated carafe, and has an aerator in the pour spout to open up flavors in the wine.

Rosé Season Is Real

A well-chosen rosé is the real workhorse wine of summer.

Depending on the grape varieties and region, rosés can range from delicate and crisp to fuller-bodied and structured enough to stand up to grilled foods.

Rosés from Provence are typically pale in color, light-bodied, and perfect alongside summer salads, fresh vegetables, and seafood. Meanwhile, rosés from Tavel tend to have more body and richness, making them excellent companions for grilled chicken, pasta salads, or charcuterie boards.

Served ice cold on a warm evening, rosé is hard to beat.

Chillable Reds for the Grill

Summer grilling season deserves red wine too — just not the heavy, tannic kind.

Reach for a chilled gamay if you want something lighter and fruit-forward, or a rioja if you’re looking for a bit more depth and structure. Both wines benefit from a slight chill and pair beautifully with almost anything coming off the grill.

Burgers, steaks, grilled vegetables, barbecue sauces, kebabs — these wines can handle it all without feeling too heavy for hot weather.

My Summer Lineup

That’s what I’ll be sipping this summer: bubbles, vinho verde, rosé, and chillable reds.

Easy, refreshing, versatile wines that fit perfectly with slower evenings, beach weekends, and backyard dinners.
